Susan Levin, RDN MS CSSD has since 2005 served s Director of Nutrition Education for Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a Washington DC based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting preventive medicine, particularly via improved nutrition, and higher standards in research. She completed a Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Bastyr University, Seattle, and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She also earned a specialty certification in sports dietetics from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
As PCRM’s Director of Nutrition Education, Ms. Levin researches and writes about the connection between plant-based diets and reduced risk of chronic diseases. Through her work, she also addresses the need for federal food policies and guidelines that embrace the foods making up the organization’s Power Plate nutritional template (vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains). In addition, Ms. Levin assists in teaching nutrition and health classes to participants in clinical studies exploring the links between diet and various medical conditions. She created and monitors PCRM’s renowned 21-Day Vegan Kickstart program.
Ms. Levin is the author or co-author of 16 articles in peer-reviewed journals, dealing with glycemic control, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, anxiety, acne, body weight, disordered eating, nutrient intakes, and health issues related to dairy intake. Her work was also the basis for the Plant-based Prevention Of Disease Conference Needs Assessment, documenting the glaring need for expanded and improved nutrition related education and continuing education for health professionals in the U.S.
