Micaela Karlsen, a recognized expert and respected speaker at some of the premier conferences on plant-based nutrition, is a doctoral fellow in Nutritional Epidemiology at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy. She holds an MSPH in Human Nutrition from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a BA in Psychology from Cornell University. She is a co-investigator for a population-based survey on popular dietary patterns and adherence factors though the ADAPT Nutritional Epidemiology project at Tufts University in conjunction with USDA. Other previous co-authored work published in 2011 and 2015 dealt with the impact of environmental interventions intended to improve household food supply and dietary habits.
Micaela is the author of “A Plant-Based Life” (published by AMACOM Books), a strategic how-to guide for successful plant-based eating, and was a contributor to the New York Times bestseller “Forks Over Knives: The Plant-Based Way to Health”, the companion book to the movie of the same name. Under the supervision of T. Colin Campbell, she co-launched the T. Colin Campbell Foundation, now named the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, the world’s foremost educational organization promoting plant-based nutrition. Micaela served as Executive Director through December 2012, and during her time in that position assisted in developing the original TCC Certificate Program in Plant-Based Nutrition through eCornell Inc. Currently, she serves on the Expert and Medical Advisory Board for the International Plant-Based Nutrition Healthcare Conference, as well as the Board of Directors for Plant-based Prevention Of Disease, Inc.
In 2013, Micaela founded the nonprofit online resource PlantBasedResearch.org, which she now manages as a database of original, peer-reviewed research studies relevant to plant-based nutrition. This website provides health care professionals and the public with access to original, peer-reviewed research supporting utilization of plant-based diets, shining a spotlight on this topic to stimulate awareness and interest within the academic and medical communities. She also founded the Habits of Health website, a comprehensive support program for plant-based eating. Her mission is to support the elegant approach that a plant-based diet offers in solving problems of human health, environmental devastation and animal welfare, by promoting interest, investigation and practice of plant-based nutrition.
