Hope Ferdowsian, MD MPH FACP FACPM, is a double-board certified physician in General Internal Medicine, and General Preventive Medicine and Public Health.  Her clinical, research and policy interests focus on the health and protection of vulnerable populations, including humans and nonhuman animals.  She is passionate about the prevention and alleviation of suffering, and explores ways in which the fundamental needs of humans and nonhuman animals intersect.  She has worked on issues including the prevention of and response to torture and other forms of violence, research ethics, nutrition research and policy, and disease prevention and management in resource-limited settings.  She serves as Associate Clinical Professor at University of New Mexico School of Medicine, and as a physician at University of New Mexico Specialty Extension Services.

She has received funding from the National Science Foundation and Arcus Foundation, and has authored or co-authored 12 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles dealing with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast and prostate cancer, skin disorders, nutrient intakes and health promotion in human populations.  She is a volunteer physician for HealthRight International, and she serves as a consultant for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and the PHR Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones.  Internationally, she has worked in Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Malawi, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Federated States of Micronesia.  Domestically, she has worked with nonprofit organizations providing health care for homeless, immigrant and underinsured populations in urban settings.
